Issue Description: Glossary of Terms and Abbreviations.
Age Class / Vintage - This is also referred to as “vintage” in Komaza and is the age of the stand you are referring to.
Aquamatrix / Hydrogel - The only chemical we use in planting and only for Eucalyptus. A gel that retains moisture around the seedling socket at planting as an insurance policy in case the rains are delayed.
BED - Bottom End Diameter of a felled tree, used to calculate the total volume of trees harvested. See TED and CBM.
Brownfield model - In this model, Komaza will plant on sites that have previously been used for some other purpose and so a land use change has occurred. This will often be from one agricultural activity (subsistence farming, Cash crops, pasture land, etc.) to forestry, or historically forested areas that are being reforested. [See Greenfield model]
CBM - Cubic Meter (m3), an industry standard, volumetric measure we use to evaluate the volume of wood we harvest from a shamba and base our farmer payments on. See BED and TED.
CCB - Climate, Community, and Biodiversity Standards (relating to Komaza’s Carbon product)
CeKe - Central Kenya RBU.
CoKe - Coastal Kenya RBU.
ESAP - Environment and Social Action Plan.
ESG - Environmental and Social Governance.
FA - Facilitator, the first line of the field operations team and is responsible for enrolling farmers, preparing the land with farmers, planting, and maintaining the shamba in the first 4 months after planting. Work on a September to August calendar. They work in geographical units called zones which are around 20km2.
FCC - Farmer Communications Center (call center)
FEN - The Field Extension Network. Everyone in the Field Ops team from Field Ops Coordinator down to a Facilitator.
FM - A Field Manager, these are the in field team leaders who manage the fundamental building block of the FEN, the FM Region. An FM Region consists of 3 to 5 Planting Field Officers (PFOs), who each manage 5 to 7 Facilitators. The FM will also be responsible for 1 or 2 Growth Field Officers.
FMP - Forest Management Plan
FOPs - Field Operations, a department within ForDiv.
ForDIv - Forestry Division, the Komaza division which includes Nursery, Field Operations, Harvest Operations, and Expansion.
FSE - Full Shamba Equivalent. This is a measurement only used in CoKe. It differs from Eucalyptus and Melia, with 1 FSE of Eucalyptus being 0.23 Ha / circa. 0.6 acres, and 1 FSE of Melia being 0.41 Ha / circa. 1 acre. It is mostly a planning measurement used by FOPs to plan for deliveries as it equates to the volume of inputs a farmer receives at deliveries.
FO / PFO / GFO - A Field Officer. There are 2 types of Field Officer in the FEN. 1) The Planting Field Officer who is a team lead that supervises 5 to 7 FAs and reports to an FM. 2) A GFO who has no team and works independently to manage the growth of shambas and farmer relations from year 2 until harvest.
FOC - A Field Operations Coordinator who manages the field operations activities at a county level. They are supported by 1 or 2 SFMs, and report to the ROM.
GBV - Gender Based Violence.
GR - Government Relations.
Greenfield model - In this model, Komaza will plant new forests in areas that have not had a commercial use before. This will often involve a land use change but is often from “scrub land” in dry or semi-arid areas (with little economic and often environmental value), into productive Komaza shambas. [See Brownfield model]
Growth - This is the Field Operations term for the post planting management of a farm (including any silvicultural activities) and the partnership management, starting the August after planting and ends at the close of the contracted term. This term is also used in the Nursery to describe the outgrowing process.
Ha - Hectare
H-P-S - Harvest, Processing, and Sales
KeFOPs - Kenya Field Operations
LR (20XX) - Long Rains, our planting schedule is planned on the long rains of that calendar year, and the operational cycle is named after that period.
OI - Operations Innovation.
OMS - Operational Management System
Operational Cycle - this is the LR period beginning from September the previous calendar year and ends in August of that calendar year
Operational Phase - Each Operational Cycle is broken down into distinct phases (Enrollment, Land Prep, Deliveries and Planting, and Shamba Management). Growth activities are a consideration outside of these operational phases and are planned on a calendar year basis.
OOMA - Out Of Management Area, the zone in Kilifi county that was removed from our plantable area after the suitability analysis conducted in 2016-2017.
RBU - Regional Business Unit that is made up of multiple counties and is managed by a ROM.
ROM - A Regional Operations Manager, who is responsible for the management of Field Operations activities at an RBU scale. They are supported by their team of FOCs and report directly to the Director.
Silviculture - is the practice of controlling the growth, composition/structure, and quality of forests to meet values and needs, specifically timber production (Wikipedia).
Size Class - This refers to a category of dbh of the tree. For example, 3 -5’, 6-10’, etc.
SFM - A Senior Field Manager, who is the key deputy of an FOC and will manage a team of 4 to 5 FM Regions.
Shamba - A Komaza term using the Kiswahili term for a farm to denote a single stand of Komaza micro-forestry.
SLA - Service Level Agreement
spp. - shorthand for Species when either discussing multiple or unknown species. E.g. Eucalyptus spp.
Stand - A stand is a discrete unit of forest that is often characterised by Age or size class, etc. In Komaza, a stand is often synonymous with Shamba.
TED - Top End Diameter of a felled tree, used to calculate the total volume of trees harvested. See BED and CBM.
TPA - Total Plantable Area
UE - Unit Economics
WG - Working Group
